There are many ways to measure the level in a tank. You can have simple visual tank devices, to noncontact highly accurate level sensors with local indication and multiple analogue and digital outputs. For simple unpowered applications, some type of float is typically used to measure the tank level. For noncontact applications, ultrasonic or radar technology is recommended to measure the level of the tank. The media in the tanks decides if an ultrasonic or a radar unit should be used.
There are many types of level indicators where floats are used. A typical level devise is the BM26A-1000. The BM26A has a measuring chamber that contains a magnetic float. It is attached vertically to the side of open or pressurized tanks. A level indicator is attached adjacent to the measuring chamber. As the float moves up and down, its magnetic field turns a column of flaps inside the tube of the indicator. Special floats can be selected if the interface between two different liquids is required. When more than visual indication is needed, high and low level switches can be added.
The invention of the ultrasonic level transmitter , 40+ years ago, significantly changed the ability to measure the level in a tank. Now it was possible to measure the level of the media from the top of a tank without having to make contact with the liquid or solid. Ultrasonic level sensors emit high-frequency sound pulses toward a material’s surface and measure the time it takes for the echo to bounce back. By calculating this “time-of-flight” against the known speed of sound, the sensor accurately determines the distance to the substance, enabling continuous, non-contact level monitoring.
Radar level transmitters are ideal for applications where there is steam, foam or dust. They are ideal for difficult liquids, slurries, solids, granulates and powders. Radar level transmitters are mounted on the top of tanks and can measure distances up to 100 meters. Initially, radar transmitters were very expensive. Fortunately, recent manufacturing techniques has allowed the price of general-purpose radar level transmitters has come down in price to the point where they can compete with ultrasonic level transmitters
When industrial environments present complex challenges like corrosive media, variable tank materials, extreme weather and tight physical spaces, you need level measurement you can trust. These case studies highlight how advanced level instrumentation is applied across real-world plants and facilities to improve accuracy, process safety and operational efficiency.
Explore the case studies below, then contact our team to confirm the right sensor technology and mounting strategy for your specific application.
Industry: Chemical Processing
The challenge: Accurate tank level measurement at an outdoor rare earth processing facility utilizing corrosive chemicals. Because of the highly corrosive media, the tanks are constructed of plastic, making material compatibility a significant hurdle for traditional contact sensors exposed to the elements and harsh chemicals.
The approach: Installation of 11 Krohne Optiwave 1520 radar sensors. These cost-effective, two-wire 80 GHz radar sensors feature Bluetooth capability for streamlined commissioning and diagnostics. Because the weatherproof units can read directly through the plastic tank walls from the outside, the radar signal delivers precise level data without requiring any exposure to the corrosive environment inside.
Outcome focus: Maintenance-free, accurate level tracking that completely bypasses material compatibility issues by utilizing external non-contact measurement.
